It is incredibly exciting to watch the innovations taking place within the sustainable apparel industry. One company on the forefront of this innovation is Recover Brands, based in Asheville, North Carolina. Recover produces apparel from 100% recycled cotton and polyester fibers. Recover's innovative production process eliminates dying the fabric in the manufacturing of garments, saving tremendously on the use of water, energy and chemicals.
Recover eliminated the dying process by sorting both the polyester and cotton fibers according to color, melting or shredding them and spinning them into a new fiber, then knitting them into fabric that can be cut and sew into a garment. Here are some statistics on Recover's lowered environmental impact:
- Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by over 35%
- Energy consumption is reduced by over 66%
- Water consumption is reduced by over 55%
I spoke with Bill Johnston, owner and operator of the company, and asked him about the Recover mission:
A huge part of our mission is customer education and building awareness of the impact the apparel industry has on the environment and society. Our mission is to produce the most ecologically friendly and socially responsible apparel possible. We strive to implement that philosophy in all aspects of our business and in every step of our supply chain. There is no greater satisfaction than when a customer understands how our products our made and can in turn share the message with others. Whether it be a wholesale customer or an end consumer, our goal is to share the Recover story and message to advocate for environment and social responsibility through textiles. - Bill Johnston.
Bill is a native North Carolinian who grew up around the textiles industry, which was a huge inspiration for starting Recover. North Carolina historically had one of the most vibrant textiles industries, and today Recover is striving to revive textiles in the state Bill calls home. Bill is also noticing that the demand for responsibly-sourced products is increasing daily as consumers become more educated and aware of their purchases. As a team of individuals who spend a large part of their time exploring the great outdoors, the Recover team wants to protect our ecosystems and local communities... "it just makes sense!" says Bill.
Complimenting their incredible commitment to environmental stewardship, Recover also gives back to social causes such as the Scott Rigsby Foundation's Aid for Boston. Scott is a double amputee who races to raise funds which provide resources for long-term care, both physical and mental, for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings who lost limbs or mobility. Within 48 hours, Recover raised $28,120, all of which went to Scott Rigsby Foundation.
Innovative, responsible, and philanthropic, Recover Brands is a leading company that is providing wholesales and end consumers with an ecologically-conscious alternative to a favorite American basic - the classic T-Shirt!
